Reader mode
Never lose track of who's who again
Open the novel you are reading and its world fills in beside it: the cast, the places, a map and a timeline, held back to the page you have reached.
For big casts and long series, and for picking a book back up after a few weeks away.
Signing up means you agree to the Terms and the Privacy policy. Atlas & Ash is for people 13 and older, and anyone under 18 needs a parent's or guardian's permission.
Three steps to a book you can't get lost in
- 1
Bring an EPUB
Any DRM-free EPUB you own and are reading. The file stays in your browser; each chapter's text goes to the AI once to be read, and only the notes about its world, the chapter titles, the cover picture and your reading place are saved.
- 2
The world builds itself, chapter by chapter
People, places, factions, journeys and a map, each tagged with the page that reveals it.
- 3
Read with it beside you
Read in the app or tell it where you are in your own copy. Nothing past your page ever shows.
It knows where you are
Set your chapter or page, or just scroll. Every person, place and event after that point stays hidden, down to the paragraph.
Tap a name to remember who that was
Characters you have already met are underlined in the text. One tap shows what the book has told you about them so far.
The map fills in as you travel
Places appear on the map when the story reaches them, and the timeline and the connections between characters grow with each chapter.
Your book stays yours
The EPUB file is never uploaded. Each chapter goes to the AI once to be read, and only the notes about its world, the chapter titles, the cover picture and your reading place are saved, privately.
Whole series, one world
Add book two and it joins the same world, picking up everyone you already met, with one reading position across the series.
Spoiler-safe by design
Every entry, connection and map pin carries the paragraph where the book first shows it. Even a name a character goes by later stays hidden until then.
On your phone too
Read on the train, tap a name, and the entry slides up from the bottom of the screen.

Plans for readers and writers
Reader mode is on every plan. For reading, the plans differ only in how many AI credits you get each month: building a companion takes one credit per chapter, plus one for its maps.
Early access: billing has not opened yet, and every account has the Writer plan free until it does, whichever card you start from. We will email you at least 30 days before billing opens, and nothing is charged without your agreement.

- 500 AI credits a month for portraits, chapter art and developing entries
Prices in US dollars. Most AI actions cost one credit: developing an entry, an answer from the Loremaster, a continuity check by the AI, one chapter read in reader mode. A picture costs three. A starter world, a generated history and each part of notes read into the codex cost two; bringing in a manuscript is free. A book's maps in reader mode cost one more. Every action shows its cost before it runs, and asking for exactly the same thing again is free unless you choose to run it fresh. Credits refill at the start of each month (UTC) and do not carry over.

Questions
- Which books work?
- DRM-free EPUBs: Standard Ebooks, Project Gutenberg, many indie and small-press titles, and books from stores that sell without DRM. Books bought through Kindle, Kobo or Apple Books are usually locked and can't be read.
- What does it cost?
- One AI credit per chapter, plus one for the book's maps, so a 45-chapter novel takes 46. The Reader plan's 120 credits cover about two novels of 50 chapters a month. Every plan includes reader mode; the Free plan's 15 credits read the first 14 chapters of a book and draw its map.
- What if my credits run out partway through a book?
- The chapters read so far go on your shelf straight away and stay readable. When your credits refill at the start of the month, open the book, choose Read past chapter N on the reading bar and pick the same EPUB, and it carries on from the next chapter. Chapters it has already read are never charged twice.
- Can I follow along in a printed copy?
- Yes. Set Pages in your edition on the reading bar to your copy's page count, then type the page you are on. The companion shows what comes before that page.
- What if I page back?
- The companion follows your place. Move it back to an earlier chapter or page and anything you have not reached at that point is hidden again.
- Can I use it on my phone and my laptop?
- Yes, your place and the companion are kept in your account. The EPUB itself stays on the device you picked it on, so to read the text in the app on another device, choose the same EPUB there once.
- Is my book uploaded?
- No. The EPUB file stays in your browser. To build the companion, the text of each chapter is sent to the AI once to be read. Only the notes about the book's world, its chapter titles, your place in it and its cover picture are saved, privately to your account.
- Can I share my companion?
- No. Companions can't be shared through a link, because the book belongs to its author and publisher. A companion's world bible holds only what you have read so far, and is for your own use.
